Sacramento is the capital of California, and although it’s one of the state’s fastest growing cities, it still retains its leafy charm. Nowadays its broad tree-lined streets and refined Victorian architecture coexist with Art Deco and post-modern skyscrapers. A thriving shipping and processing centre for agriculture in the Central Valley, it has more recently also become an area of residential spill-over from the Bay Area.

Sacramento is not a tourist destination as such, but it has its fair share of attractions and activities. As the gateway to the ‘Gold Country’, several fine museums and living monuments pay tribute to the era. Visitors and locals alike also enjoy spending time walking through Old Sacramento, floating lazily down the American River, or cycling along the shady paths.

Old Sacramento features many historic buildings housing shops and restaurants, along with saloons, wooden sidewalks and cobbled streets. It’s an easy walk from here to the State Capitol, passing through the downtown shopping mall and pedestrians-only K-Street. California’s distinctive State Capitol building, crowned with a gold-plated dome, is set in splendid surroundings.

The California State Railroad Museum is one of the biggest railroad museums in the country, exhibiting over 100 painstakingly restored antique locomotives and rail carriages. The State Indian Museum documents 400 years of local Native American history and culture in fascinating style.

One of the biggest and oldest gold mines can be found at Empire Mine State Historical Park. The mine closed in 1956 but remains as an interesting place to explore. The park also features hiking, cycling and horseback riding through forested, remote backcountry. Just a short drive west is the trendy, bustling city of San Francisco, famous for its Golden Gate Bridge and alternative, liberal atmosphere.

Sacramento is 650km north of Los Angeles on I-5. Train routes offer a scenic alternative to reach Sacramento, taking in the natural beauty on the way. Greyhound runs a frequent and reliable bus service between Sacramento and San Francisco. Sacramento International Airport is situated about 20kms northwest of town and serves mainly domestic routes.
