A pleasant city nestled between an inland sea and a snow-capped range of 1,320-metre high mountains, Salt Lake City is famous for its Mormon heritage. Utah’s capital is also a great place for skiers, hikers, mountain bikers and just about anyone who enjoys outdoor pursuits.
Salt Lake City is fairly small for a modern American city and the presence of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can be overwhelming. Churches are everywhere, Sunday afternoons are quiet times, and many of the tourist attractions are related to Mormon history. However, the city also boasts a fair number of historic buildings, museums and restaurants and there is even some nightlife.
In the centre of Salt Lake City is Temple Square, home to the Temple, the Tabernacle and the Assembly Hall. Although only Mormons may enter the Temple, it's worth visiting Temple Square for the brilliant architecture. On the east side of the downtown area, Trolley Square is a National Historic Site, housed in cute, olden-day trolley car barns. This is a fun spot for shopping, dining and entertainment.
While you’re in the area, make sure to visit the lake that gave the city its name. Great Salt Lake is about 16kms northwest of downtown and is the largest lake in the USA, west of the Great Lakes. The Great Salt Lake has been declared a World Heritage bird sanctuary and is thus popular with birdwatchers.
Another natural wonder, Mount Timpanogos, is located 65kms southeast of the city and boasts the Timpanogos Cave National Monument. The caves contain underground pools and interesting geological structures. You’ll have to take a small hike that climbs up to 300m, but the views are rewarding.
Two major interstate highways intersect at Salt Lake City: I-15 heads north-south and I-80 east-west. There is also a loop road (I-215) that connects the eastern, southern and western fringes of the city.
Amtrak trains arrive and depart from the Rio Grande Depot on the western edge of downtown, with a daily service that stops each way on its journey between San Francisco and Chicago. Greyhound Bus Lines has connections to and from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Denver, Portland and Seattle. Salt Lake City International Airport is 10kms west of the downtown area.
