San Diego features perfect, reliable weather and stretches of picturesque, tranquil beaches. These attributes, plus a host of edutainment attractions, explain why the city is one of America's best tourist destinations.

Balboa Park is located in the northeast section of downtown and is home to the world-famous San Diego Zoo as well as numerous museums and cultural centres. The Zoo is touted as the best in the world, with extensive wildlife collections housed in aesthetic enclosures. It also operates a huge Wild Animal Park 50kms north of the city at Escondido, where you can go on safari and witness the free-ranging wildlife interacting naturally in this enormous 1800-acre park. While in Balboa Park, sample the spectacular San Diego Museum of Art, the quaint Timkin Museum of Art, the Centro Cultural de la Raza, the Casa be Balbao and the Rueben H Fleet Space Theater & Science Center, an interactive science museum with a huge-screen Omnimax theatre.

In the heart of the city, the Gaslamp Quarter features premier dining, shopping and entertainment. Enjoy wandering through the streets, soaking up the atmosphere of the painstakingly restored historic buildings. Embarcadero, west of downtown, is the waterfront section of the city. Spend a pleasant afternoon visiting the Maritime Museum, with its moored collection of old ships, and exploring the original dockside.

Both north and south of the city are magnificent stretches of white sandy beaches. Southward, discover the attractions at Encinitas, which is home to the Self Realization Fellowship founded in 1937 by Yogi Paramahansa Yoganada. There are beautiful gardens, a great surf beach, and the Encinitas' Quail Botanical Gardens. To the north, near the town of Oceanside is the lovingly restored Mission San Luis Rey Francia, with its extensive display of fascinating religious artefacts. Heading inland, nature lovers can observe unique desert wildlife at the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

While San Diego's Lindbergh International Airport has some direct international flights, most visitors connect from Los Angeles. Numerous reliable transportation options are available from the airport to the city.
