Sardinia - sky guide
for Sardinia car hire
Sardinia has a slightly up-market reputation, but welcomes all, and gets busy in the summer. It is a beautiful and unspoilt island getaway with an interesting history that includes the Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, Pisans, Genoese and Spaniards.
Cagliari, the capital, is an interesting medieval town with a beautiful beach. Remains of old city walls surround parts of the old port and feature two Pisan towers. It's a pleasant town, easily explored on foot and has an impressive Roman amphitheatre excavation. The archaeological museum is also worth visiting.
The Costa Smeralda is Sardinia's best-known resort area and lives up to its reputation for opulence, though it isn't cheap. Many prefer to visit for the day and slum it elsewhere on the island.
The unspoiled Costa Verde is nearby, with lovely beaches and grottoes around the tourist enclave of Alghero, and the trekking and traditional culture offered in Nuoro province. Alghero has a distinctly Spanish atmosphere.
The best way to experience Sardinia and its lovely interior is to hire a car and discover the many secluded bays and fishing villages. Fascinating remnants of the 7000-year old Nuraghic civilization are littered across the island in the form mysterious, stone-built constructions.
In the south are the splendid dunes of Pistis at Torre die Corsari and of Piscinas at Ingurtosu (Arbus); as well as the metalliferous limestone cliffs of the Iglesiente, with truly unexpected and spectacular views.
There are airports at Cágliari, Alghero and Olbia, all of which receive international flights. Cagliari receives the lion's share, but charter flights are numerous in the summer. From Asia or North America you have to connect via Rome, Naples or Milan. Ferries also cross to Italy daily (4 hours or longer), from Cagliari to Palermo, Naples, Rome to Elba. From Alghero, ferries cross to Corsica and Nice throughout the summer.
