Romanticised by its haunting Highlands, the sound of the 'pipes' drifting across the glens and the invitation for a 'wee dram' of whiskey from the friendly locals, Scotland is one of the most popular tourist areas in Britain. From the streets of Edinburgh to the lonely Hebrides Isles, the country offers plenty of unique attractions.
The medieval city of Edinburgh is popular with tourists, many flocking to see the dramatically located Edinburgh Castle. From its 1200-year old ramparts you can admire this undulating city and stroll down the Royal Mile to Holyrood Palace. The ancient Cowsgate area is particularly curious, and the city boasts many fine museums, along with a great atmosphere.
Within easy driving distance is Stirling, with its two important historic icons, the towering William Wallace monument and Stirling Castle. St Andrews is famously known as the birthplace of golf and features a fine ruined abbey.
Heading north, the resort town of Aviemore is gateway to the Cairngorms, popular in winter as the UK's only ski area. To reach the Highlands you have to skirt the giant Loch Ness, which is (apparently) home to an enormous 'monster'. Urquhart Castle ruins, on its banks, should not be missed.
The Highlands are Scotland's unique attraction, and north of Inverness the roads meander through spectacular glens and along deserted lochs. The Inner Hebrides, off the western coast, are the country's most accessible and bewitching islands. Skye, linked to the mainland by bridge, is the most visited, while other popular islands include Jura, Islay, Mull and spiritual Iona.
Situated above the small town of Fort William is Britain's highest peak, Ben Nevis. Oban, on the west coast, is a quaint fishing village and from here it's an easy drive to Glasgow, via the lovely Loch Lomond.
Both Edinburgh and Glasgow have international airports, though only the latter receives transatlantic flights. Arrivals are restricted to flights from some European cities and most visitors catch a train from the far busier London airports (4 hours). The bus is cheaper though less comfortable.
