Seattle is pleasantly located on the shores of two large lakes and skirted by two major mountain ranges. Although it’s often raining in the area, Seattle is still a popular destination for outdoor activities. After a hard day enjoying the outdoors, settle down with a warm cup of coffee at one of the many cafés.

The most noticeable attraction in Seattle is the Space Needle, a 183-metre observation station and revolving restaurant. It’s a breathtaking 43-second ride to the top by elevator, where you are rewarded with 360-degree views of the city. The Space Needle is nestled in the Seattle Center, which was the site of the 1962 World Fair. Other remnants of the fair include: the Seattle Opera House, the Pacific Science Center, two sports arenas, a children's museum and the Fun Forest Amusement Park.

Seattle has many arts and culture venues, including the Seattle Symphony, now housed in the world-class Benaroya Hall; the Seattle Opera; the Pacific Northwest Ballet; and numerous art galleries. Additionally, there is the Seattle Art Museum and the Seattle Asian Art Museum, along with the Experience Music Project rock and roll museum, which opened in June 2000.

Hit the slopes on skis in the mountains east of the city. Alpental, Snoqualmie Summit, Ski Acres and Hyak are the best spots. Also take time to visit Snoqualmie Falls, which offers good hiking and the spectacular Salish Lodge and Spa. Puget Sound encompasses a collection of romantic misty islands. Bremerton, a naval base 24kms west of Seattle, has an interesting Naval Museum and also features the USS Turner Joy, a US Naval destroyer.

If you're driving to Seattle, you'll probably arrive via the I-5 or I-90. Seattle's King Street Station is the terminus of two Amtrak train lines: the east line to Spokane and Chicago and the south line to Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Greyhound buses link Seattle to Portland, Eugene and points in California as well as Vancouver and Chicago.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is the largest in the Pacific Northwest; it is 21kms from Seattle’s central business district. The passenger-only Victoria Clipper departs daily from Pier 69 in Seattle for Victoria, British Columbia. There are also numerous other ferries to Washington State destinations.
