Well known as the original home of the Mafiosa, the island of Sicily is the 'ball' at the end of Italy's 'boot'. This island is rich in art, history and folklore, and has a cosmopolitan, multi-cultural society. It also boasts stunning natural scenery of mountains, lush forests and fantastic beaches.
Catania is probably the most important city in Sicily and has two Roman amphitheatres and, located in Piazza Federico di Svevia, Ursino Castle, which used to be a coastal fortress before volcanic eruptions extended the coastline.
Agrigento is a small medieval city with a Romanesque Gothic cathedral in its historic centre. In the Valley of the Temples are the ruins of numerous Roman temples, a small amphitheatre, several auditoria and a fine archeological museum.
Cefalu is one of the Mediterranean's undiscovered jewels, a stunning seaside town set beneath the Madonie mountain. It has a beach, narrow medieval streets, and delightful restaurants overlooking a rocky coast.
Trapani offers spectacular views of some of the Mediterranean's most beautiful sunsets, due to its western location. It's also chock-full of Romanesque and Gothic architecture and medieval elements, with some beautiful churches and a good museum. It's well worth visiting.
Sciacca is a picturesque seaside town built on rocky heights, midway between Marsala and Agrigento, with excellent beaches. Ficuzza, a royal hunting lodge near Palermo, is set amidst large woods with a man-made lake and is a lovely excursion.
The Lipari Islands are a volcanic archipelago visible from Sicily's eastern Tyrrhenian coast. Here you'll find beautiful scenery, volcanoes, castles, thermal resorts, water sports, good fishing and picturesque beaches.
Mount Etna is Sicily's greatest natural attraction. Etna offers skiing in the winter months and breathtaking hikes in the woods during the summer. The scenic Alcantara Gorge is located on the Alcantara River north of Mount Etna.
Sicily's airports are quite efficient and are located at Palermo (Falcone-Borsellino Airport) and Catania (Reggio di Calabria Airport) with frequent flights from Rome and Milan, as well as from selected European cities.
