The gorgeous city of Siena, located a short distance south of Florence, is home to a maze of enchanting, winding streets, bathed in a rich burnt sienna colour that seems to be reflected from the stone of its Gothic buildings.

The best way to appreciate this city is on foot, winding through the narrow alleys to the many historical sites, churches, museums and palaces. The Museo Civico, in the Palazzo Pubblico, is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture constructed between 1288 and 1309 and filled with frescoes by Sienese artists.

It is embellished with several typical Sienese symbols, including arches over the doors and windows, a sculpture of a suckling she-wolf in the courtyard, and numerous examples of the black and white ‘balzana’ emblem. Also in the Palazzo is the Torre di Mangia, a 102m tower built in the 14th century. From the tower’s apex there is a breathtaking view over Siena’s streets and rooftops.

An additional sightseeing highlight is the cathedral, with its impressive Duomo. This magnificent structure, built between the 13th and 14th centuries, displays both Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements, revealing the shift in design styles that occurred during the time that it was built.

The Piazza del Campo is a medieval, fan-shaped area that is one of Tuscany’s loveliest squares. Early evenings are especially atmospheric here, and it’s a wonderful place to relax and watch the passers-by while sipping some fabulous Tuscan wine.

Siena is also overflowing with superb restaurants and cafés, many of which are very reasonably priced. For ambience, try Antica Osterio da Divo, just around the corner from the Duomo in an underground, grotto-like space. Trattoria Papei, on Piazza del Mercato, is a reasonably priced eatery serving excellent food.

Exploring the region surrounding the city is an utter delight, due to the beautiful scenery and nearby vineyards responsible for the production of excellent Tuscan wine such as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino. Also accessible by car from Siena is glorious, romantic Florence, with its limitless cultural, historical and entertainment attractions.

By car, you can reach the city by taking the autostrada from Florence, or head west from the Val di Chiana exit of the autostrada from Rome. Trains and buses run regularly between Siena and Florence, from where numerous national and continental connections are available. The nearest airports to Siena are at Florence and Pisa.
