The inspiration of WB Yeats’ poetry, situated in the northwest of Ireland, is the town of Sligo. This pleasant and endearing town attracts many visitors year round with its long history and natural wonders. Sligo won’t fail to impress those who make the journey here.
Located in a gorgeous Victorian edifice is the Yeats Memorial Building. The building is a shrine to the great poet and is home to a photographic and audiovisual centre. A history of the Stone Age and a collection of Yeats’ poetry can be found at the Sligo County Museum. Alternatively, the oldest decorated high altar in an Irish monastic church is housed in Sligo Abbey, a Dominican friary founded from 1252 to 1253. The altar dates back to the 15th century, and there’s also a remarkable carved O’Crean tomb dating to 1506.
The atmosphere in Sligo is unbeatable - the locals are friendly and the pubs are lively. After a long day of sightseeing, you can sit back with a pint of Guinness and listen to traditional Irish music. There is also an abundance of fine restaurants situated around town, along with a handful of good crafts shops.
On the outskirts of town, you’ll find the Garavogue Riverside, which is an ideal location for a stroll and a picnic. For those seeking luxurious comfort, try the Celtic Seaweed Baths, which offer hot seawater, fresh steamed seaweed and therapeutic massage.
The best thing about Sligo is its natural beauty, and there are mountains to Sligo’s north, south and west, which all offer breathtaking views. Carrowmore Megalithic Tombs is the largest megalithic cemetery in Ireland and among the oldest and most important in Europe. A series of outdoor sculptures from Irish and international artists can be found on the Hazelwood Forest Park Sculpture Trail.
Motorists will find that Ireland has few multi-laned highways, but driving is, scenically, a pleasure nonetheless. Sligo is easy to locate on the N15. Alternatively, there is the well developed Bus Eireann network with services from Dublin, Galway, Donegal and other areas.
You can fly into Ireland’s major international airports at Dublin, Shannon, Belfast, Derry and Cork, some of which have onward connections to Sligo Airport. Ireland is linked to Britain and Europe by a number of car-ferry routes. The main ports of entry are Cork, Dublin and Rosslare.
