Lying to the southeast of Naples, Sorrento is a popular beach resort town with a lovely cliff-side setting, vibrant nightlife and a scattering of fine, old buildings.

The principal attractions are the beautiful beaches of Marina Piccola and Marina Grande with their fine, soft sands and clear, warm waters, ideal for bathing. Water sports enthusiasts are well catered for with windsurfing, snorkelling and pedal-boating among popular activities. Farther afield and a lot less visited, yet still delightful, are the beaches at Ruderi Villa, Romana Pollio and Marina Puolo.

For a slice of culture, the intriguing Museo Correale di Terranova boasts superb examples of local paintings and inlaid woodwork. The nearby San Francesco Church is the most historic piece of architecture in the town and is well worth a visit. The beautiful Piazza Tasso and Villa Communale gardens offer a respite from the beach scene and are ideal for strolling.

Dining is made easy in Sorrento by the wide range of cafés and moderate to inexpensive restaurants. The nightlife here is exciting, and bars and clubs are also in numerous supply.

Sorrento is well placed in an area brimming with top-rate attractions, and driving is a good way of exploring the sights. Dormant Mount Vesuvius can be driven up, except for the last few hundred metres, and it offers fantastic views. The excavated ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, engulfed by a pyroclastic flow from Vesuvius’ last eruption, make for a fascinating daytrip. The islands of Ischia, Procida, and especially Capri are stunning and definitely warrant a visit.

If you are travelling by car, the main Naples–Reggio di Calabria A3 highway intersects with the SS-145 to Sorrento. There is a regular rail service from Naples Central Station to Sorrento and local buses run from Naples’ central bus station. Naples has an international airport that receives Europe-wide flights; alternatively, Rome International Airport is easily accessible via the A1 highway.
