Sydney, with its beautiful harbour, vibrant pace, multicultural society and awe-inspiring landscapes, is Australia's premier city.
Sydney Harbour or Port Jackson is the defining characteristic of the city, with streams of ferries and yachts pacing the beautiful bay whose rocky islands, beaches and sandstone headlands make it one of the most beautiful harbours in the world. You can go sailing, catch the Manly ferry, swim at Nielsen Park or walk from Manly to Spit Bridge. Australia's most recognisable icon, the Sydney Opera House, with its sail and shell-like roofs, is situated on the eastern headland of Circular Quay.
Sydney is a vibrant city with blends of old and new which can be seen in the mix of modern high-rises and grand old colonial buildings. Sydney also boasts a multicultural society and you can wander through Chinatown and Spanish town. Old buildings are concentrated around Macquarie St, with the most impressive being Parliament House, Sydney Hospital, the Mint Building, the exquisite Hyde Park Barracks and St James Church.
Darling Harbour, a waterfront entertainment complex and leisure park, comes alive every night. It is a beautiful area made up of walkways, gardens, museums, an aquarium, convention centre, casino, eateries and shops. The Chinese garden, IMAX Theatre and the highly recommended Sydney Aquarium are some of the many highlights.
On the eastern shoreline are the popular beaches of Bondi and Coogee, while across the harbour is Taronga Zoo and the lovely up market seaside suburb of Manly.
Within easy reach of Sydney there is much to explore by car. The Blue Mountains offer awesome vistas and the Snowy Mountains and Mount Kosciusko are both popular winter destination for skiers. The southern coast has plenty of worthwhile stops with little seaside villages and surfing towns and the north coast is a repeat of endless perfect beaches and small coastal towns, punctuated by picturesque bays, lagoons and forests.
Most visitors to Sydney arrive at Kingsford Smith Airport, and Australia's internal airlines offer discount flight packages (to be used once inside the country) to most major domestic airports, including Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
