The vibrant metropolis of Tampa is nestled along the less commercialized and fashion-conscious western coast of Florida. With its varied range of inhabitants forming distinct communities, Tampa is a fascinating city full of excellent museums, fine cultural events, thrilling theme parks, and pretty, sun-soaked beaches.
A popular attraction with kids of all ages, Busch Gardens is an African-themed amusement park located about five kilometres north of downtown. It boasts electrifying rollercoasters among a slew of other rides. The park is also home to one of the largest zoos in the country, with thousands of animals roaming in natural landscapes. For those who want to get out of the sun but still enjoy the sealife, Florida Aquarium is located to the east of the downtown area and boasts themed exhibits ranging from a wetlands display to a colourful coral reef.
The Museum of Science and Industry makes for an educational and fun day out. It features a huge range of hands-on exhibits and an IMAX theatre. The Tampa Museum of Art is located in the centre of the downtown area and carries an unparalleled collection of artwork, Roman and Greek antiques, and a varied selection of sculptures and photography.
The quirky yet intriguing Ybor City was once the Cuban cigar-making capital of America. Today it is party-central, filled with restaurants, bars, shopping malls and breweries. The explosive nightlife is concentrated around Ybor Square and 7th Avenue East, with fantastic food and a range of vibrant of music dominating the scene.
The best beaches are about 32kms to the west of the city, towards the St Petersburg end of Tampa Bay, with Clearwater Beach being one of the more popular. In St Petersburg, make sure you see the Salvador Dali Museum, which houses the largest collection of his distinctive works outside of Spain. Nature-lovers will enjoy Hillsborough State Park, situated 14.4kms north of Tampa and only accessible by car.
Interstate 4 and Highway 60 brings travellers to Tampa from points east, including Plant City, Lakeland, and Orlando. Interstate 75 and Highway 301 accommodate those travelling from points north and south. Amtrak offers nationwide rail connections with a daily north-south service connecting Tampa with Washington, DC and Orlando. Greyhound Bus Lines operates services to Sarasota, Orlando, Miami and Gainesville. Tampa International Airport is one of the most modern and efficient in the country.
