Toulon is a modern port town situated between Nice and Marseilles on the Mediterranean coast. It is France’s principal naval base, with a beautiful port and hundreds of sailors wandering the streets.

Towering behind the town is the spectacular Faron Mountain. One of the highlights of a visit to Toulon is the breathtaking sunset view of the city, its harbour and the Mediterranean in the distance from corniche du Mont-Faron, a scenic boulevard along the lower slopes of the mountain.

The old city is centred on rue d’Alger and its core is pedestrianised, making it a relaxed, atmospheric area to explore. Le Marché is an open-air fruit and vegetable market that is open daily and provides fascinating insights into local life. The Cathédrale Ste-Marie-Majeure is another highlight of the old town, built in the 11th and 12th centuries and expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries. The result is an interesting mix of Romanesque, Gothic and 18th century architecture.

The Musée de la Marine is closely connected to the town’s maritime past, and showcases many figureheads and ship models. Musée de Toulon houses a collection of artwork from between the 16th and 20th centuries, including an excellent selection of French and Italian works.

Unsurprisingly for a port town, Toulon is crowded with night-time entertainment venues. Some of the most popular venues are the unpretentious Le Bar 113, Bar á Thym, and Cuneo, good for live music. An excellent place to eat is La Chamade, serving sublime French cuisine and located in the town centre.

About two kilometres east of the centre of town is plage du Mourillon, the best beach in the area. Hyére is a resort about 26kms east of Toulon where there is a casino and an upmarket discotheque. Also within driving distance is the popular town of Aix-en-Provence, as well as the interesting port destination of Marseilles.

Toulon is accessible by car via highway A50 from Marseilles. It’s connected by train and bus, either directly or indirectly, to most destinations in France and to cities in Europe. The international airport at Toulon is situated quite far out of town, but buses and taxis provide transport into the centre.
