Situated at the foot of the Pyrenees is the endearing and attractive town of Toulouse. With a labyrinth of winding streets and stunning architecture, this busy student town is a great place for sightseeing.
At the spectacular town hall you’ll find the Henri-IV Courtyard, adorned with the work of local 19th century artists, including Henri Martin and Jean-Paul Laurens. The Hall of Fame is filled with busts of the city's celebrities. Near the place du Capitole stands the 13th century Church of the Jacobins, a Gothic monastic building constructed entirely of brick that features an incredible vault supporting the roof of the choir.
On a walking tour you should first visit the old quarter, known as Ville Rose. The quarter is a network of narrow paths and pink-brick buildings, centred on the place du Capitole, a large square home to caffes and food vendors. The square is busy on Wednesdays when a lively market takes place.
A 20-minute drive from Toulouse is the space museum, Cite de l’Espace. With a massive exhibition centre and lots of hands-on displays, this extremely modern museum is definitely worth the drive.
Also close by is the town of Albi. The town was once a Gallo-Roman town and the site of the Albigensian Crusade, a war between the Catholic Church and the Albigenses non-believers, known as the Cathars.
By car, take the A10 south to Bordeaux and then the A62 to Toulouse. The European rail network connects most major cities on the continent to France via Paris. Nine high-speed TGV trains leave Paris for Toulouse every day, reaching the city in approximately five hours. Toulouse-Blagnac International Airport lies in the city's northwestern suburbs, 11km from the city centre. Air France has about 25 flights a day from Paris to Toulouse, and two a day from London.
