Although Tours was almost flattened after WWI, the city has now been restored to its former beauty. With an old town full of grand medieval houses and charming courtyards, it won’t fail to impress the visitor.

Situated in the eastern part of town is the Cathédral de St-Gatiens. Built between the 13th and 16th centuries, it is a splendid blend of Renaissance and Gothic architecture. Next door to the cathedral is the Musée des Beaux-Arts, once the Archbishop’s Palace, the interior of which is ornately decorated with Tours silks and Louis XVI panelling.

Visitors can walk around St Pierre le Puellier square, where there’s an old Romanesque church which is now a pleasant café. Not far from the square is the artisans’ quarter, around rue du Petit St Martin.

The nearby Loire valley is without doubt one of the most scenic regions in France. It’s also renowned for its Renaissance châteaux, known as the Châteaux de la Loire. In the endearing town of Blois, between Tours and Orléans, you’ll find the Château of Blois. This chateau dates back to the 13th century, when it was a feudal fortress, and it was finally completed in the 17th century. Inside, a geometrically shaped well surrounds a majestic spiral staircase with ornate railings depicting the salamander, the king’s symbol.

Tours is situated on highway A10 where it intersects with national routes N10, N76, N101, N138, N143, and N152 and with D29 and D140. Rail travel to Tours is simple, with both the high-speed TGV system and the standard train system running to the city. From Paris, you can catch the TGV to Tours from Gare Montparnasse. Tours has its own airport, located just 10 minutes driving time from the town centre. Taxis can be found outside the airport terminal.
