With its willow-fringed canals and medieval houses, Treviso is often compared to nearby Venice, though it has a character all its own. The city is well known for its production of fine wines and delicious Italian fare.
Early risers should explore the town’s colourful fish market, located in via San Parisio, next to the River Sile, which has been used since the market was established in the Middle Ages.
Both the cathedral and the Museo Civico feature paintings of the highest quality by Titian; while Lorenzo Lotto painted the lively fresco of page boys in the Church of San Nicolò. San Francesco Church holds the graves of Francesca Petrarch and Pietro Alighieri — not the two great medieval poets — but their offspring who, quite coincidentally, both met their end in Treviso.
Dining in Treviso is a pleasure, and the restaurant chain known as El Toule da Alfredo offers delicious fare in a plush setting; the sorbets made with local fruits are especially exquisite. The food here is relatively expensive but well worth the price for the fine quality.
The area around Treviso offers amazing driving country, especially heading into the Dolomite Mountains, where fine wines are produced at the foothills. The Strade dei Vini del Piave highway is a highlight, offering fantastic views of the Piave River. Richly adorned Venice, a city of pedestrians and water traffic, is the major attraction of the region with the Basilica of San Marco as its main drawcard.
The (east-west) A4 intersects with the (north-south) A-27, leading to the SP-62, west to the city. There are many trains to Treviso from Venice, Mestre and Padua, every hour. Treviso Airport is located to the west of the city, but the choice of entry for most visitors will probably be Venice’s Marco Polo Airport, which receives scheduled and charter flights the world over. Transfers are convenient and reliable.
