Trieste straddles Italy and the Balkans. The gateway to Slovenia, it is characterised by its gorgeous setting beside the Adriatic Sea and is the place where pasta and cheese dumplings happily co-exist.
The focal point of this city is the hill of San Giusto, which is home to a castle and the Duomo; the latter is located near the ruins of an ancient Roman basilica. The panoramic views from this vantage point are incredible and are reason alone to venture to Trieste. Relaxing on the peaceful castle grounds is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
The old town’s network of streets and alleys shelters old churches and houses as well as several museums. The Museum of History and Art contains an eclectic collection of other nations' cultures; while the Civico Museo Revoltella, Trieste's main museum, houses a display of Triestine paintings. The Sartorio Museum is worth visiting for its icons; while the Morpurgo Museum is notable for its late 19th century furnishings.
Trieste is a major port for coffee, and the Belle Epoque Caffè San Marco is one of the best places to sample the brew. Additionally, there are some lovely little cafés and restaurants in town, as well as several bars and pubs which are fairly laid-back, in keeping with Trieste’s calm image.
For an amazing drive, head south along the Istrian coastline of Slovenia and Croatia. Inland on the road to Ljubljana, Slovenia's fascinating capital, lie the caves of Postojna. Also of interest is the beautiful Rosandra Valley to the south of Trieste.
The A4/E70 highway runs into Trieste from Padua and Mestre in Italy; while the A10 highway and route 10-4 run to Ljubljana in Slovenia. Trains from Mestre and Venice terminate at Trieste Station at the edge of the town centre. Venice’s Marco Polo International Airport receives flights the world over, with plentiful transfer options to Trieste.
