Turin, in northwest Italy, attracts tourists not only with the famous Shroud of Turin, but also with its quaint old city centre, glorious churches and fine museums. Extensively bombed during WWII, this ‘Car Capital of Italy’ (named because of the Fiat factory) has recovered, and sports an inner core of grace and harmony. With all these treats and a convenient location, Turin is an excellent holiday destination.

The world famous and somewhat controversial Shroud of Turin, or Santissima Sindone (Holy Shroud), is the city’s main attraction. The Shroud, a sacred relic to many, is housed in the magnificent 15th century Duomo and draws thousands of visitors each year.

The Shroud is said to be the cloth that Joseph of Arimathea wrapped around the body of Christ when he was removed from the cross, and it is claimed that the 3.5-metre piece of linen reveals the agonized features of a man who suffered crucifixion. The church where the Shroud of Turin rests is also worth touring and boasts stunning artwork and architectural design. You can find out more about the Shroud at the Museo della Sindone.

Turin is home to many other interesting churches, including: Gran Madre di Dio, Santuario della Consolata and San Lorenzo. The elaborate castles of the area are also worth visiting. Castello Valentino, Borgo e Castello Medioevale and Rocca Medioevale are especially enthralling. Palazzo Carignano, Palazzo Madama and Palazzo Reale, as well as the truly remarkable Porta Palatina, are all palaces worth seeing. Turin also boasts many museums scattered throughout the city.

There is much to see in the area surrounding Turin. Nearby, the magnificent Basilica di Superga affords stunning views of the city and the Alps. Also close to the Turin, Stupinigi Palace is an impressive sight. Outdoor enthusiasts should head to Sestriere, Monviso, or the Valle d’Aosta region. Additionally, Parco della Colletta, at the confluence of the Dora and the Po, is a good place to bird-watch.

If you’re travelling to Turin by car, the A4 leads in from Milan and Venice; the A5 comes from Ivrea and Aosta; and the A6 arrives from Fossano, Ceva and Savona. Turin's central rail station is located in the town centre, and it services trains from all across Europe as well as from within Italy. Città di Torino Airport (Sandro Pertini), open to commercial and international traffic, is 16kms northwest of the town centre.
