Tuscany is one of Italy's world famous regions, with its enchanted landscapes, its quaint towns full of ancient Etruscan and Roman ruins as well as its medieval history.
Tuscany holds together as a region, from tiny San Gimignano, with its 13 medieval towers to magnificent Florence. The 2,000-year-old city offers the largest number of historic buildings and works of art in Italy. Any art lover who is planning to go to Florence would not dream of missing a visit to the Uffizi, one of the world's premier museums.
Arezzo is one of the great Renaissance gems and among its many masterpieces two that stand out are the Duomo, with glorious frescoes and a tomb by Giotto, and the 15th-century church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Nearby, Cortona is one of the oldest towns in Tuscany. Much of its Etruscan wall remains, separating the charming little medieval city from the surrounding olive groves and vineyards.
The seaside resort of Viareggio is famed for its raucous Carnevale parade in February, and the resort town of Forte dei Marmi has some of the chicest cafes and designer boutiques in the country. A few miles away is Lucca, famed for its perfect city walls, the wonderful 13th-century facade of San Michele, and the enchanting elliptical shape of Piazza Anfiteatro.
Maremma is not only very authentic but also fascinating. The Etruscan tombs outside Sovana lie within a magnificent Tuscan forest; as you wander amongst the oak groves, you suddenly come face-to-face with stones that were planted there thousands of years ago. Also in the area are the unique thermal waterfalls of Saturnia, the ancient hill town of Pitigliano, famed for its lace and its Jewish origins and the unspoiled coastline, boasting broad sandy beaches, quiet coves, shady pine forests and more than one wildlife refuge.
Experience the natural wonders of Tuscany's parks, wildlife reserves and thermal baths. Some national reserves include: Orecchiella, Lamarossa and Pania di Corfino. All of these reserves are in the province of Lucca.
Florence has two airports - Amerigo Vespucci for domestic flights and Galileo Galilei (near Pisa) for international flights. Galilei has regular connections to London, Paris, Munich and major Italian cities. There are also two bus stations.
