The romantic city of Venice, with its winding canals, gondolas and captivating palaces has attracted visitors for centuries. Slightly overrun by tourists in the summer, it still retains its charming and unique character.

St Mark's Square lies at the centre of the city and has a constant carnival atmosphere, with ceaseless activity, bustling cafes and the hourly clanking of the bronze Mori (Moors) as they strike the bell of the 15th-century Torre dell'Orologio.
St Mark's Basilica, a mass of domes and arches, is one of the most spectacular houses of worship in the world. Adorned with an incredible array of treasures, it is famous for its golden mosaics. The Gothic style Palazzo Ducale (Doges' Palace) lies at the city's historical heart and once housed the doge, the many arms of the Venetian government and a couple of prisons.
For a leisurely day on the canals, get on a water taxi or a gondola and cruise the Grand Canal, Venice's main waterway. You will see several famous bridges including the ancient wooden Accademia Bridge that leads to a quieter Venice, the Galleria dell'Accademia and nearby Peggy Guggenheim Gallery. There are no cars allowed on the island, so the day is best spent walking the cobbled pavements, getting lost and finding interesting shops and sights along the way. Vaporetti (water taxis) are a common way to get around.

Venice is surrounded by equally enchanting islands. The Lido is a strip of land protecting Venice and boasts fine residences and good beaches. The islands of Murano and Burano are quieter and less commercial than Venice. Murano is famous for its glass blowing, while Burano is known for producing fine lace. Both are enchanting with their sleepy canals, friendly locals, colourful buildings and fishing village atmosphere.
It's possible to fly directly to Venice from many European destinations, as well as a few transatlantic cities. Most visitors arrive at Marco Polo Airport, 12kms from Venice, while a few charter flights land at Treviso's tiny airport, about 35kms north of Venice. Shuttles run regularly to Mestre, the small mainland town that services Venice.
