Verona is one of Italy's most charming towns. It is graced with good archaeological sites and features an appealing medieval centre. The Roman Arena, where concerts and operas are performed in the summer, is the city's grandest sight, with a capacity for 20,000. In addition, 'Juliet's balcony' is a principal stop for Shakespeare’s fans.

Verona is a city made for strolling, with snaking old narrow lanes and a traditional atmosphere, as well as sights like the Via Cappello with its Casa di Giulietta, the fictional home of Shakespeare’s Juliet. Other sights worth visiting in the city include: San Fermo, Sant'Anastasia, San Pietro Martire and Duomo churches; the antique Porta Leoni gate; and the complex Scaliger Tombs. Additionally, the Loggia del Consiglio and Domus Mercatorum buildings are awe-inspiring.

Castelvecchio is an innovative and imaginative art gallery set in a 14th century fortress. Here you'll discover medieval and Renaissance works of art carved into the walls.

The Piazza delle Erbe is the place to go for a touch of vibrant city life. This central square is speckled with jolly market stalls and flanked by impressive palaces. At the northern end of the square, the Marble Column bears the lion of St Mark, the emblem of Venetian authority. Also of interest is the Torre del Lamberti, the city's 84-metre bell tower.

The largest and most southerly of Italy’s great lakes, Garda, is a short distance from Verona. This is a good place to relax with a picnic or a walk in the mountains. Alternatively, explore the charming Roman spa town of Sirmione, which boasts cobbled streets, elegant cafés and the fairytale castle of Rocca Scaligera. Farther afield, Venice is just 80kms east of Verona.

By car, take the A4 west from Venice to the exit marked Verona Sud. From points north or south, take the A22 and get off at the exit marked Verona Nord. Thirty-seven trains a day make the two-hour run between Venice and Verona, costing €5.75 one way. Verona’s Valerio Catullo Airport is located 12kms to the southwest of the city.
