Situated at the tip of Vancouver Island, Victoria is one of Canada’s hottest tourist spots. Besides its natural beauty, Victoria has some interesting architecture, good museums and a lively nightlife. The outlying area of the city is replete with beaches, hiking trails and verdant forestland.

One of the most pleasant places to visit here is Butchart Gardens. This fantastic 50-acre garden, north of the city, houses Japanese, Italian, rose, and sunken gardens, now growing over 700 varieties of flowers. The Royal British Columbia Museum has some great exhibits and galleries; while there’s a marvellous collection of totem poles in the adjacent Thunderbird Park.

For a perfect day out in this city, head to Beacon Hill Park, which lies at the southern tip of the city. Here you’ll be overwhelmed by beautiful ponds and gardens, a petting zoo, and jogging and walking paths. The southern lawns afford panoramic views of the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Most of your shopping can be done on Government Street in the downtown area. The 19th century market square is a pedestrian-only area, and is home to many cafés and boutiques. During the night hours, Victoria comes alive with its English style pubs, as well as superb dining, music, art and theatre scenes.

East Sooke Park, situated 45 minutes drive from Victoria, is an excellent place for hiking with its rocky bays, pocket beaches, jagged coastlines and quiet forests. The Pacific Rim National Park Reserve has beaches that stretch for miles and attract surfers and kayakers.

Victoria International Airport is served by several Canadian and American airlines. However, most visitors fly into Vancouver International Airport and from there take one of the Air BC airport-to-airport services that depart hourly from Vancouver to Victoria. BC Ferries operates passenger and vehicle service between Vancouver and Victoria several times a day. Ferries arrive at the Swartz Bay Terminal at the end of Highway 17, 32kms north of downtown Victoria.
