Washington, DC, the capital of the USA, is one of the world's more tourist-friendly cities. Although the city is not as trendy as New York or Los Angeles, this metropolis is easy to navigate, full of impressive buildings and monuments, and plays host to the nation's finest museums.

Capitol Hill is the heart of the Washington, DC. Several wide, leafy avenues lead up to the structure's imposing wings that branch from the impressive iron dome. The US Congress has been housed here for over 150 years, and tours through these sacred halls are extensive and captivating.

Another main attraction, the Washington Monument, is a 166-metre spike with an impressive viewing deck. Beyond the structure is a lengthy reflection pool leading up to the majestic Lincoln Memorial, which has become symbolic over time as a platform for protests and important political gatherings.

The solemn yet poignant Vietnam Memorial is also in the area. This simple but effective structure bears the names of 58,202 American soldiers who were killed in action during the Vietnam Conflict.

Of course, no visit would be complete without a trip to the White House, home to every US president since 1800. The heavily guarded mansion is open to limited tours. The Jefferson Memorial and FDR memorial are two other striking reminders of former US presidents.

The Smithsonian Institution, a mammoth collection of fine museums, is possibly the city’s greatest treasure. The most popular museum of the collection is the National Air and Space Museum.

Not far from Washington, you can drive across the Potomac River to Arlington, home of the enormous Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery. Kennedy's grave and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier are important attractions in the area. Georgetown, a suburb of the DC area, is lively by night, packed with students and boasting more than enough historic buildings and attractions.

For those entering or exiting the city by car, I-66 is the main artery east (and for Dulles International Airport); the George Washington memorial highway follows the river out of town to the northwest. I-395 runs south into Virginia; while I-295 exits north and I-495 circles DC. Greyhound bus services connect Washington, DC, with most other regional cities.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is in the centre of the city; while Baltimore-Washington International Airport is located 48kms northeast of Washington. Dulles International Airport is the busiest airport, lying 40kms west of Washington, DC.
