In recent years, the city of Winnipeg has really taken off. These days Winnipeg is an exciting, interesting and cosmopolitan city, which offers everything you’d expect in any large city. During its Theatre Fringe Festival, the place really comes alive.
One of the best sights is the incredible Museum of Man and Nature, where visitors can learn much about humanity and, hopefully, leave enlightened. One area that should not be missed is the Exchange District, which has an abundance of Victorian commercial buildings.
Another popular attraction is the Planetarium Auditorium, where you can see some great movies. In the evening, you can wine and dine on one of the riverboat cruises that sail up and down the river.
You won't be short of things to do at night in Winnipeg. The city is home to a mixture of performing arts, including: the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Manitoba Opera and several theatre, dance and music companies.
Leaving the city to the north, you’ll come across Lower Fort Garry, which is the oldest stone fur-trading post in North America. Here everything remains as it was when the post was in operation. To add to the experience, costumed docents carry on the chores of the day, while outside the walls of the fort, a re-creation of the trading of fur takes place.
Winnipeg is only one hour north of the US border crossing at Pembina North Dakota. In Canada, the Trans-Canada highway (east-west) provides direct connection to all major urban centres in Canada. From the US, both I-29 and Minnesota Highway 94 (border crossing into Canada in Emerson) connect to Manitoba Highway 75 north to Winnipeg. Additionally, Minnesota Highway 59 and US2 (border crossing Tolstoi) connect to Manitoba Highway 59. Winnipeg International Airport is 10kms northwest of the city centre and there is a regular bus service every 20 minutes.
