Established in 1890, California's Yosemite National Park consists of almost 1,200 square miles of spectacular geological features, supreme scenic attractions and outstanding recreational opportunities. This World Heritage site is a truly unique holiday experience.
Yosemite Valley is the world's best-known example of a glacier-carved canyon. Its leaping waterfalls, towering cliffs and massive monoliths are daunting. The sheer cliffs and flat floor make visitors feel dwarfed by the grandeur of nature. The valley has provided inspiration for poets, painters and photographers, in particular John Muir and Ansel Adams. The valley also features a myriad of open meadows sprinkled with wildflowers and other varied flora. Those wishing to experience the waterfalls of the valley in all their magnificence should time their visit for May and June.
The incredibly scenic Tioga Road (California Route 120) runs through the expansive sub-alpine Tuolumne Meadows and the surrounding Sierra Nevada high country, passing sparkling lakes, fragile meadows, domes and lofty peaks, and offering superb views. Other park highlights include Glacier Point, with its spectacular view of Yosemite Valley and the high country; Mariposa Grove, home to hundreds of towering giant sequoias, the world's largest tree; Hetch Hetchy, a reservoir in a valley considered a twin to Yosemite Valley; and the historic hotels of Wawona and Ahwahnee.
Black bears are the predominant form of wildlife in the park. The bears will eat almost anything and are opportunists, making human-bear encounters frequent as scavenging bears often enter campgrounds, approach cars and turn up at picnic areas. Feeding the bears is prohibited, since this results in the bears becoming aggressive and threatening the safety of visitors. Other wildlife of interest in the park include California bighorn sheep, golden eagles, coyotes, mule deer, squirrels, great grey owls, Steller's jay and the peregrine falcon.
Fresno Yosemite International Airport is served by connections from other US cities, while Merced Airport is served by United Express Airlines. Shuttles are available to the park year round. Travel in the park is via free shuttle bus, tour bus or private vehicle.
